Wots the Big Idea, is essentially Trudie, Andy, Shane, Johnny and Scott, with a few other helpers as we need more specialised skills. The thing that binds us together is our shared passion for what we do and our dedication to doing the best job we can. We work hard, we create brilliant solutions and our clients love us! But who are we??
“A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…. well it seem like it anyway. For as long as I can remember I have loved to draw and paint and create. I remember watching my father paint these beautiful painting as a very young boy and just wanting to do the same. I’d spend many an afternoon or weekend sitting with him and drawing or painting with him.
Now I guess I’ve just taken that natural instinct to be creative a step further where I now help businesses grow and mature, give a mood or a thought or just make someone want something just by creating a look or a feel through an image, a word or even a colour.
However I can switch off and I do have a life outside of work, although not much of one according to my wife. Most of my spare time is taken up staying fit and active down the gym, at my allotment or cycling around Rutland water. But I do relax and can quite easily veg out in front of the TV and as you may have guessed by my introduction I have a love of Sci-Fi.”
“I love my job. I love the challenges of a brief and I love coming up with ideas, talking to clients and producing work that clients are delighted with. Being a Graphic Designer is a very rewarding task for the most part and it’s so easy. People always ask “how do you come up with a design from a blank sheet of paper?” and I shouldn’t really tell you this but it’s easy – it just happens!
There is a definite thrill to creating a concept and then shaping it and crafting it into something that works. I’ve been a graphic designer now for over 13 years and am still absolutely passionate about it. Over the years I’ve worked on a huge variety of projects from print to new media, becoming a great all-rounder with tonnes of experience in all sorts of things – as I said before, I do love a challenge! Flash animation, web, print, concept development, typography – I think that it’s the diversity of the work we do and the people that we do it for that really makes life exciting.
“You can take the boy out of Essex but you can’t take Essex out of the boy! OK so I’ve out-grown the fast cars but I’m still larger than life with a passion for all things internet. Some (Trudie!) may think it’s a bit geeky but I love learning about all the latest web technologies and want to deliver them to our clients so that we can be the leaders in our field, not the followers in the crowd. I never liked to be in the back-seat…”
I thrive on design and love the diversity of what I do. Every day is a fresh challenge at WTBI!
A Derby man through and through (Come on you rams!) outside of work I enjoy comics such as DC and Marvel, Xbox live and going to the cinema. I’m a huge Music lover, regularly going to festivals and gigs.
“As far back as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be a programmer (okay so when I was a kid I wanted to write games). I still play games when I get the time, mostly strategy (Mark of Chaos, Dawn of War), MMORPGs (Age of Reckoning, World of Warcraft) and first person shooters (Halflife 2)
I love films and go to the cinema at least once a week, my favourites genres are action/adventure, animations and comedies.
I read fantasy and sci-fi novels (think Terry Pratchett, Dan Abnett, Kim Newman etc) which I find a huge source of inspiration, my favourite quote from a book is “Thirsts exist to be slaked, lusts to be satiated, desires to be fulfilled”. Artists I like include Luis Royo, John Blanche and Salvador Dali.
I really enjoy fencing and am good with a Foil (my preferred weapon) and getting better with an Épée.”
I’m really enjoying working with the guys at Wots the Big Idea. I am reveling in the challenges and consistent expansion of my knowledge in multiple areas of online development. My knowledge is increasing every day and I am quickly learning skills that will propel me forward in the future.
Outside of work I spend my weekends gaming, chilling out with friends and playing football. I’m open minded with my choice of music but my favourite types are; Dance, Rock and Pop.
